Pumpkin-carving party at the Schoolhouse!

A spur-of-the-moment pumpkin-carving party was organized at the schoolhouse earlier this week. The pumpkins became magnificent jack-o’-lanterns under the talented knives of our neighborly carvers.

Hard at work

Decisions, decisions....

The pumpkin's transformation

Still in need of some "plastic surgery"

Work in progress

Not everyone likes 'scary'

Ready for its candle

Halloween, here we come!

Dave Primus on the trains of the Gunnison Country

Potluck dinner before the program

Dave explains an old photo

After a neighborly, delicious potluck dinner, one of our local experts, Dave Primus, gave a talk on the trains of the Gunnison Country. Did you know that between the early 1880s and 1955, there were two competing railroads in the Gunnison-Crested Butte area? Showbox on iPhone There was a railroad all the way up the Ohio Creek valley to Baldwin, where Star Mountain Ranch is today. Illustrating his talk with plenty of old photos, Dave discussed the rivalry and what happened as the railroads stopped running.

School days, school days, good old golden-rule days

The original cover of the song, 1907

This was a popular song for generations. You can hear it here.

School days, school days
Dear old golden rule days
Readin’ and ‘ritin’ and ‘rithmetic
Taught to the tune of the hickory stick
You were my queen in calico
I was your bashful barefoot beau
And you wrote on my slate
“I love you, so”
When we were a couple of kids

Nothing to do, Nellie Darling
Nothing to do you say
Let’s take a trip on memory’s ship
Back to the bygone days
Sail to the old village school house
Anchor outside the school door
Look in and see
There’s you and there’s me
A couple of kids once more

School days, school days
Dear old golden rule days
Readin’ and ‘ritin’ and ‘rithmetic
Taught to the tune of the hickory stick
You were my queen in calico
I was your bashful barefoot beau
And you wrote on my slate
“I love you, so”
When we were a couple of kids

“School Days, School Days” (1907), Music by Gus Edwards, lyrics by Will Cobb

Tag sale a big success!

Treasures of the valley!

The schoolhouse autumn tag sale was successful for sellers, buyers, and the schoolhouse itself, which received “table rent” which will go to maintenance. We hope the tag sale will become an annual event.
